Land Records

Raja Todar Mal was the Finance Minister of the Mughal empire during Akbar’s reign. He was one of the Navaratnas in Akbar’s court. Raja Todar Mal introduced standard weights and measures, a land survey and settlement system, revenue districts and officers. This system of maintenance by Lekhpal is still used in India which was improved by British Raj and Government of India.

A Land Record/ Record of Right (RoR) is a legal agricultural document used in India that specifies land and crop details. It is often used in conjunction with a shajra, which is a reference map of the village that administers the land described by the khasra. Khasras traditionally detail “all the fields and their areas, measurement, who owns and what cultivators he employs, what crops, what sort of soil, what trees are on the land.” In Indian Land record system, “Khatauni” is an account book, “Khasra” is a survey book and “Sajra” is the village map. At village level, lekhpal is appointed to update and maintain these land records. Citizen can get unverified RoR from and for verified he has to visit either concerned tehsil or CSC.
