Prime Minister’s Crop Insurance Scheme
Prime Minister’s Crop Insurance Scheme: This scheme is being implemented up to the village panchayat level in the state. Under the scheme, in the event of damage caused by natural disasters, diseases, or pests, farmers are provided financial assistance in the form of insurance coverage. It is applied on a voluntary basis for both loanee and non-loanee farmers. For all crops, the premium rate to be borne by the farmer is limited to 2 percent of the sum insured for Kharif crops, 1.5 percent of the sum insured for Rabi crops, and up to a maximum of 5 percent of the sum insured for annual Kharif/Rabi crops. The last date to obtain crop insurance is July 31 for Kharif crops and December 31 for Rabi crops. In adverse weather conditions where sowing cannot be done or is unsuccessful in more than 75 percent of the area of the village panchayat, the farmers are entitled to compensation of up to 25 percent of the sum insured, in proportion to the expenditure on production costs, in the event of a disaster. After the harvest, during the next 14 days, if the crop kept in the field for drying is damaged due to hailstorm, cyclone, unseasonal/cyclonic rainfall, compensation is provided by assessing the damage at the individual farmer’s level. In case of damage of more than 50 percent of yield up to the mid-stage of the crop in the gram panchayat, farmers are provided partial compensation up to a maximum of 25 percent of the potential compensation as immediate relief.
